1960 West Berlin. Teenager memoir
to 1969 Munich

1960 West Berlin Teenager memoir
to 1969 Munich. by carla egerer
Berlin 891,8km², Munich 310 km2

Chaos draw lost time forth and back jumps
Telegraph style
No one has written about all day life.
The author grew up in West Berlin, as a teenager.
1960 I’m living in Cold War zone West Berlin,
a backdrop straight out of the 1930s,
surrounded by the Cold War of the 1950s,
in the American sector near Bayerischer Platz.

Berlin, after the lost war, is carved into four zones:
West Berlin – the American, French, and British sectors.
East Berlin and East Germany – the Soviet occupation zone.
On my way to school,I stop at the newspaper
stand in the U-Bahn.August 13, 1961
The Berlin Wall was erected by night.
1966
We head to Pfaueninsel for a photography assignment.
Crossing the Havel by ferry. Beneath the water lies the
Iron Curtain –rusted iron posts visible. Cold War
chills down the spine.
In the distance: armed Russian soldiers.
”Russkies”.StG44 aussaultrifles shouldered.

In 1947, U.S. General Clay commented:
“95% of the German judiciary are identified Nazis.
But we have to keep them.”

From the 1966 diary: Wednesday, January 5, 1966
Alix called, wanted to come over.
At 3, took Captagon at Lisa’s. Smoked. Frank, Raul,
Wolfgang, Rufus were there talking. Woyzeck. Music. Home by 5.

Lisa Bauer – pianist, 36 years old.
I’m 18. She has a grand piano in her studio and gives lessons.
I recover at her place from my mother.I listen to classical music .
My mother is in despair.

Lisa lives two blocks away on Helmstedterstraße 5;
I live at Berchtesgadenerstraße 14.
She has many friends , an art salon. They come to her loft.
I enjoy their company. They’re all 6 to 10 years older than me
.Lisa consumes music nonstop – concerts and events at the
Academy of Arts in the Hansaviertel or the Congress Hall
in Tiergarten.I accompany her. She wears silver mobiles
on her ears, handmade.
The Congress Hall – built by US architect Hugh
Stubbins for the Interbau 1957 exposition.
A curved roof.

I love Lisa too.
We sleep in her wide, elevated loft bed at the far end of her studio.
We touch, gently. That’s all. She’s like an older sister.
At that time, love was an emotion that connected us all –
unique. We hugged often, kissed each other.
This love united us. We wanted to see each other every day.
It was a beautiful sense of time – of community.

Our group – 20 extraordinary people –
visit each other constantly:
in apartments, in clubs, at Le Punch at 2 a.m.,
Old Vienna at 4 a.m. Tenderness.
We cared for each other.Talked.Smoked from small pipes.
We explored. Human love.
We were sisters and brothers to each other.

Hella Utesch
– my soulmate. We loved each other deeply.
She lives in a studio on Joachimsthalerstraße near Kudamm.
Hella designes menus for a high-end luxury restaurant,on
handmade paper.I helped her. Slept at her place often.
She had a big bed.The studio had large windows.
In the morning, one of us would make warm chocolate
pudding in the kitchenand serve it in bed.
Kisses, embraces.We loved being together.
A couple.

Pic Grunewald, Berlin – Liebfrauen Gymnasium
Alix left. Carla in boots.

1960s teen in West Berlin.

The streets and shops still had a 1930s
feel.Every streetcorner had a vacant lot from the ruins.
Modernity was just a stage set I lived in.The Cold War
– a kind of mourning. We were fleeing so-called normality.
We lived in the American sector. My life:
a double existence.A great peace lived within us –
a time of joy and community, surrounded by the Cold War.

“What do you think?” We asked each other often.
My motto:
Launch Rebel Media. A global leader in brain matters –
led by girls. Fuck the brain mush of male-driven stories.
“You’re crazy, child... you have to go to Berlin,
where all the crazies are...”
– from an operetta by Austrian Suppe.

Berlin – a lost post, an island.
A visit to the world of grown-ups.
A fellow student , Gabriele from Heidelberg and
I drive in her gray 2CV Citroën to Pfaueninsel –
cross by ferry, close to the East Berlin border
running through the Havel river. Rusty iron bars
in the water.Cold War thrills. In the distance,
armed Russkis? The gray Citroën has spring
seats with removable fabric covers.

Diary 1966Saturday, April 23, 1966
Nico’s dress rehearsal. Brigitte picked me up.
We went to the photography exhibit at Lützowplatz,
then to KDW,(Kaufhaus des Westens,
departmentstore of the west)
to Gina’s boutique—bought a dress (probably shoplifted).
Home by 2. Called Dimi.
(P.S. Dimi is Harun Farocki’s friend)
At 5, came with Heidi.
(P.S. Heidi Joachimidis—a pale creature, married to an art dealer,
Dimi’s girlfriend. Lives in Westend, Kastanienallee or Lindenallee.)
We smoked—everything was beautiful. We played dress-up.
Heidi and I went to the pharmacy for Captagon.
Then to Bettin’s (Café Bettin near Bayerischer Platz—open late).
Dimi stayed the night.
We came back at 8. Listened to music.Took more Captagon.
At midnight, Peter and Monika showed up.
We all drove in Monika’s car to the Dicke Wirtin, then to the Punch—
too crowded—ended up at Why Not with Gisela.
Back to the Wirtin around 5. With Moni and Peter to Benz.
Home by 7.(Ref: Captagon – a stimulant developed in 1961
by Merck Pharma, banned in 1980. Fenethylline:
a codrug of amphetamine and theophylline.
Revonal: a sedative with methylquinazolinone, banned in 2003.)

Thursday, May 12, 1966
Deep depression. Crawled into bed, took Revonal.
Peter, Monika, and Axel came by, brought things.
At 8, Uwe and Gloria came. I was a wreck.
Went home with them to Grunewald, near Königsallee.
Axel was there too.
Uwe treated me coldly. Gloria was kind. Debby and
Harold also there.Took a cab home at 2. (P.S.
I think I cried. It's a grand, beautiful apartment
in an old villa, ground floor with a garden.
A raised, glassed-in room above the main space—
sat in there and cried.)

Friday, May 13, 1966
School. At 11, to KDW. Photographed Gloria in
the garden (with my glass plate camera).
At 3, visited Uwe and Gloria. They don’t want
my mother to know anything.
I left—devastated. Felt sorry for Uwe.
Took photos from the balcony at home. Alix called.
(P.S. All that’s left to submit are the glass plate
photos. My room.)

Wednesday, June 15, 1966
Olaf came by—back from Hamburg.
Dimi called. Leroy came over. Then Roy and Mae.
We all went to Punch. Home at 4.

My parents are from Vienna –
Mother a biochemist, father a physicist.
Austria: the waltzing cosmopolitans.
Berlin: Germany’s thinkers, the authority.
Berlin: collapse and bankruptcy after the lost war.
1960: A visit to the adult world.
Berlin – a lost cause, my life a double existence.
Berlin in peacetime: a 1930s camouflage
(ref. Berlin = morass, swamp).

1960
The words Hitler and Jew were on the index in Germany.
You weren’t allowed to say them. The era of silence.
Annie: The nouveau riche, the barbarians,
les bouches, the butchers...les crétins…
Olaf, my best friend. A queer dandy.
He said: “Men and women don’t go together—
except in one place.”
